Discover Happy Together

Walking into Happy Together feels like stepping into a neighborhood diner that already knows your order. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long day when comfort food matters more than presentation. The place sits at 9920 Valley Blvd 1st floor, El Monte, CA 91731, United States, and it’s easy to miss if you’re just driving by, but locals know exactly why the parking lot fills up around dinner. The dining room is casual, the lighting warm, and the energy relaxed, which makes it perfect for family meals or low-key catchups with friends.

The menu is where this spot really earns its reputation. On my first visit, I asked the server what regulars order most, and she didn’t hesitate. Her suggestion led me to a hearty rice-and-protein combo that arrived sizzling and generously portioned. Over time, I noticed how consistent the kitchen is. That kind of reliability matters. According to National Restaurant Association research, consistency is one of the top three factors diners associate with trust in a restaurant, and this place proves why. You can come back weeks later and get the same flavors, the same portion size, and the same level of care.

One thing I appreciate is how the staff explains dishes without rushing you. I once watched a server patiently walk a first-time customer through spice levels and ingredient swaps, which shows real attention to guest experience. That matches what Yelp reviews often highlight: friendly service and food that feels homemade rather than mass-produced. In my own experience, orders come out quickly but never feel slapped together, which suggests a kitchen that follows clear prep processes and timing methods instead of cutting corners.

The flavors lean toward comfort and familiarity, yet there’s enough variety to keep repeat visits interesting. Whether you’re craving something savory, slightly sweet, or deeply umami, the menu covers it without overwhelming you. Portions are generous, and I’ve taken leftovers home more than once. From a value standpoint, that matters. Consumer Reports notes that diners increasingly judge restaurants by portion-to-price balance, especially in local diners, and this spot lands on the right side of that equation.

What really sets this diner apart is the sense of community. During one visit, I chatted with a nearby table who said they drive in from a neighboring city just for weekend meals. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through steady quality and trust over time. The reviews echo this pattern, often mentioning how the restaurant becomes a regular stop rather than a one-time try. While no place is perfect, and wait times can stretch during peak hours, the staff is upfront about it, which builds credibility instead of frustration.

Food safety and cleanliness also stand out. The dining area and restrooms are consistently clean, and the open layout lets you see the staff moving with purpose. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasize transparency and hygiene as key factors in diner confidence, and visually, this restaurant checks those boxes. That attention to detail reassures you before the first bite even lands.

If I had to describe the overall vibe in a few words, it would be comfort food done right and a local favorite for a reason. It’s not trying to be trendy or flashy, and that’s exactly why it works. You come here for dependable meals, friendly faces, and the feeling that you’re eating somewhere that values its customers as much as its cooking.

  • This place is inside the hotel. So I've never seen this place until I was invited to eat there. We had the whole suckling pig with crispy skin, the roast goose, and the whole crab with fried wild rice. The dim sum here is also superb, especially their rice noodle rolls. So fresh and seems like it's made in house. The egg tarts were awesome. The pork spare ribs were meaty and juicy with not too much fat. Other side dishes were also just spot on. I need to go back to try the other dishes as well as the other dim sum items.

  • Pretty good food being under new management. The restaurant is inside Holiday Inn. Dinner entrees were above average, dim sum items were mostly up to par except the egg tarts. The egg tarts were far from the HK style, the egg custard was way too overcooked and colored. The crust was poorly formed. I couldn’t bring myself to consume them. The promotions on the chicken (BOGO soy sauce or plain chicken ) and 10% off weekday dim sum were good. The dim sum selections were limited but reasonably priced. Worth to give it a try. My favorite is the gold sand scallops, great flavor and value. The servers were friendly and efficient.

  • Quick Summary Really solid dim sum spot. The food is freshly and well made. Service was pretty good for dim sum standards. Parking is a hit or miss since the restaurant uses parking in the Holiday Inn Express. Pretty good prices as well. Food- 5 stars Pretty good quality and fresh dim sum at pretty good prices. Some of the best sticky rice lotus leaf wraps and baked buns around the area here. Everything is really solid and fresh, and their unique speciality is their coconut crispy chicken which is pretty attractive if you get the full chicken. You get close to the quality of a Lunasia at a much lower price Service- 5 stars Similar to most dim sum restaurants, you do have to flag the wait staff if you need something. Otherwise, the servers were pretty attentive on clearing out plates and getting orders out efficiently Ambiance It's not as tightly packed as other dim sum restaurants. There's plenty of waiting area since it's attached to the Holiday Inn Express. It just can be a wait during weekends and there's not much to look around if you're waiting, since it's not attached to a larger strip mall Bottom Line Really good dim sum at great prices. Just make sure you go early or late during the weekends to avoid the wait times

  • We had the Peking duck, spicy pig ear and sauteed string beans. It was all delicious. Portions are great and the staff was very pleasant. Loved all of it.

  • A new, very good Dim Sum place, located inside the Holiday Inn motel. Pricey $$ but good quality. My favs were the chashu pork, cheun-fan (steamed rice rolls) with shrimp or chashu, spicy shrimp & pork wontons and the baked chashu buns. A special mention about their roasted chicken. They ask if they want it whole or pre-cut. We chose the whole chicken. Because it's an IG-worthy dish. But that's it. It was good, but not great (a little dry.) Everything was non-extraordinary. Nothing bad. Everything was prepared the way it should be - which is very good. The cold cucumbers appetizer dish was good, but the Szechuan peppercorns(?) made my tongue go numb. It took a while for my taste buds to wake up again and fully enjoy the rest of the dishes. It was tasty and different than DTF's. Our friends called ahead and put our group on the waiting list. At 130pm we still had to wait 35-40 minutes for a table for 8. The wait time for smaller groups was much better (10 min.)

  • A Must-Try Dim Sum Gem in El Monte! You absolutely have to check out Happy Together in El Monte—it's seriously a must-try for dim sum lovers! It's super easy to find, located right in the same area as the Holiday Inn. Heads up: The portions here are huge! They are noticeably bigger than your standard dim sum restaurant, so make sure you pay close attention to the order size listed on the menu. We learned this the fun way when we ordered the egg tarts and got six instead of the usual four. Talk about a delicious overload! We had a huge party of 16 people and spent about $360, but honestly, we brought home a ton of leftovers because we completely overestimated the portion sizes! They don't use the traditional carts here; instead, you just mark your order on a paper sheet, and they bring the fresh food straight to your table—no need to wait for the cart lady to roll by. It is a smaller restaurant, so definitely try to come early if you have a big group. The largest table can squeeze in about 16 people (it was a cozy fit, but hey, that's what family is for! ). Highly recommend!
